Strange, my new computer has been restarting randomly. Sometimes it makes a high-pitched screeching sound before freezing, while other times it just reboots. Anyone have any idea whats going on? Usually happens when I'm playing WoW or rendering videos. Doesn't seem to happen when I'm doing other stuff.

Specs are:

Motherboard - ASUS Sabretooth P67-B3
Processor - Intel i5 2500k
Graphics Card - Sapphire Radeon HD N6950 2GB DDR5
RAM - G Skill Ripjaws-X 12800/1600Mhz CL9 4GBx2
Harddisk - Crucial M4 128gb SSD, Samsung 1TB SATA2
PSU - FSP 650W Aurum Series Gold 80+ Modular
CPU Fan - Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler

Shouldn't have problems running WoW tbh.

you didnt put ur rams side by side by any chance?

Has it been ever since you got it or has it happened recently?

also ur GPU temperature is really high if thats idle

I had similar problems some months back.

What I did to fix the problem was to pull out the graphics card and RAM,
let the system sit for awhile,
switch the power on without the cards and rams
Switch off, resit RAM and Graphics card

That apparently reset the motherboard and I don't encounter random crashing after that.

Hm not sure. The first time it happened I was frapsing, so probably about three weeks ago. Subsequent times was because I was rendering video, and playing WoW at the same time so I figured that was too much. Recently it's starting to happen when I just run WoW so I'm getting concerned.

What's a good temperature for my GPU? It's currently at 43, 43, 48 and I'm not doing anything.

those temps are ok, i thought it was 58 when idle.

try tweaking the fan in ur gpu via ati overdrive, and put it to manual and around 60-70% fan speed, u can fiddle around with the fan speeds because it gets a bit noisy when u crank up the fan. the temps should drop down to 37 or less when idle

Hrm, lowest I can get when idle is 42.

Should I lower my settings in ATI Overdrive?

Currently they're:

Those were set by the guys at the shop.

nah u can leave the gpu clock and memory settings since thats the default.

u already put fan speed to 65% and ur temps on idle still 40+? i can see than the system automatically reduces the clocks speeds when idle which should drop ur temps when ur pc is doing nothing...

hmm, try opening the side case of ur cpu and point an electric fan blowing into the case, if ur temps drop by more than 4 degrees theres something iffy with the airflow inside.

Sounds like its BSOD'ing but as its not throwing it up to dump before crash idk.

Would check RAM.have you got any DDR3 spare? Also try Swaping Sides with RAM u have now. There is a program called some thing like memroy test will check RAM has no errors.

Power supply would be my next bet.Seems like its bigger enough and 80+ and googleing it seems ok.but yea bad Power supply under hevay load would crash like you describe.

Video card card would be my final guess.

Hrm I shifted my CPU away from the wall a little. Playing WoW now, with temperature at 56 and fan speed at 65%. :s

ur temps on load is low, was expecting 65ish when wow is open. at least we have overheating out of the equation now. (though ur gpu can take up to 90 i think trololoollo :fap:)

try what josh said about switching the ram slots if u still having problems with ur pc auto restarting when playing wow or rendering.

Ugh it just restarted again.

Can only do the memory test on Tues since I don't have my thumbdrive with me.

By swapping sides for RAM you mean I can just swap the two pieces of RAM to each other slots?

Cause right now it seems like I can't put RAM in the fourth slot with that big ass fan.

Yes just swap then around:this ofcause will not fix anything but maybe it will, not work, work and crash faster, work as just as is now. one of the 1st 2 letting you know RAM is the problem

Is your RAM in RAM slot 1 and 2 should be numbers on motherboard cant quite see in photo

I also have the same style heatsink just different brand.anyhow i rotate it 90% left as looking at the photo now, allows me to fit RAM in just cant use oversized RAM heatsinks.

Can you show photo of hole PC case might be able to see air flow better.Heatsink fan blowing left to right as shown would be blowing hot air from top right of case.unless you had fan blowing air in on a side pannel.temps are high but should'nt make you crash least not without it telling you so.Did you apply thermal paste yourself?if so what brand?and how?

I think its the RAM.. I swapped them around and the computer couldn't boot. After I removed one completely it's working fine for now. The piece I removed also had an odd smell coming from it :/

Not sure how to rotate the heatsink - I'm kind of a PC noob. Not sure about the thermal paste, but I don't recall buying any at the shop.

sounds like you do indeed have defective ram from what you've said here and the previous posts, most ram has lifetime guarantees if it's good stuff, might be worth seeing if you can get a replacement.

Hmm a new twist. Took out my case cover to take the pic that Josh asked for, and thought what the heck might as well put the RAM back in and give it a go.

They were originally on slots 2 and 4, now I plugged them into 2 and 3 and it seems to work. The supposedly defected one is in slot 3 now and is detected as well. Could be the RAM slot 4 that's acting up?

Anyway here's the pic of my CPU:

put it 1 and 3, not 2 and 3

edit: oh wait a fan is in the way

It's possible for sure, have you used the memory diagnostic tool yet?
